It is one of the leading cities in Europe for queer people based on several rankings. The community engagement, the number of queer spaces, and the nightlife scene all comes together to make queer people included, visible, and valued in Berlin. Berlin has a rich history of queer culture dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries, including bars and small performance venues for gay and trans people in the current Schöneberg neighborhood. Moreover, during the division of Berlin into East and West, the culture was preserved in East Berlin in the neighborhoods of Prenzlauer Berg. These days, Berlin is a colorful thriving city celebrating all sexualities and genders. Keep reading to find out must-visit queer places and things to do in Berlin.

You can start discovering the city by learning the history of queer liberation in Berlin and Germany at the Gay Museum (Schwules Museum). The first museum in the world dedicated to gay history was opened in 1985 in Berlin Mitte. Initially, it covered homosexual people’s history, but now it is broadened to set more emphasis on the diverse specter of sexualities and gender (lesbian and trans people) in art, culture, and history in the past and present. It is located on Lützowstraße 73 in Schöneberg. Opening times vary. You should check that on their website. Regular entry costs 9 EUR.

Queer bookshops in Berlin.

Photo by Robert Anasch on Unsplash

There are several bookshops and libraries in Berlin focusing on queer literature. Here, we want to highlight the most prominent ones worth visiting.

Möbel Olfe located just under Kotti (Kottbusser Tor). A popular among locals bar with excellent music, unusual decor with floating furniture, and Tuesdays hosting a ladies’ night when only women can enter. During weekend nights, it gets bustling, so we recommend checking it on weekdays.

Roses – a bar with a rich history operating for a few decades. It is just two blocks away from Möbel Olfe. You can find the interior of the 70th disco style with lovely music by local DJs.

Silver Future – a lesbian bar nearby the Hermannplatz. You can get a good set of cocktails and meet many interesting people there, starting from artists to people doing science.

Bar Zum Schmutzigen Hobby – a bar in a famous area of a former fire station now called a RAW-gelände. A home-like design and lovely friendly staff create a cozy vibe to have drinks with friends.

Lab.Oratory – a man-only bar on the first floor of the Berghain building. It has one of the biggest darkrooms in Berlin and doors open only for two hours, so after midnight you can’t enter it while it works till morning behind closed doors. If you want to experiment and open for fun, check that place out. Keep in mind not to confuse the queue with the Berghain queue. Lab queue is always on the left side, and Begrhain’s on the right side.

Queer clubs in Berlin.

Photo by Aleksandr Popov on Unsplash

Berlin is famous for its hedonistic nightlife scene with zero judgment, where all the places try their best to create a safe space for everyone. Among many interesting nice queer clubs, the ones you must visit are:

KitKat – a fetish-themed club in Kreuzberg that hosts a variety of parties. It has a long history of being a sex-positive space, but recently it shifted to more of a dance venue. Besides outstanding techno music, you should expect in Berlin traditions several dark rooms and an exciting swimming pool with swings on top of it. If you visit Berlin or move here, KitKat is a must-go club. You can expect a queue from half-hour to a few hours, but it is lesser than in Berghain.

Berghain – a club, described by locals as a Berlin church of techno music. It is a very exclusive club with long-long queues. But once you are inside, you feel like being in a different world, the world of pleasure and acceptance. So if you have time to spend in long queues and try your luck to get in, you should check out Berghain.

Schwuz – a famous gay club in Neukölln in a former theater building. It is a huge club that plays non-techno music which is rare in Berlin. Nevertheless, it is popular among locals as they invite the best DJs for their parties. Another difference from other clubs is that you can pay by card in Schwuz, which is also super rare in Berlin, which loves cash.

Ficken3000 – a migrant-owned small club/bar nearby Hermannplatz. It is famous for its dark rooms, but the place is open to everyone. They host good DJs on Fridays, and the entry is cheapest in Berlin, only 5 EUR. The crowd is mostly men in their 20-30th. However, women are also allowed to enter when they come with their gay friends.

Queer events in Belrin.

Photo by Mercedes Mehling on Unsplash

As for the events, one of the most significant annual queer events in Berlin is the CSD Berlin. It is a month-long festival in June that hosts hundreds of smaller events across Berlin, from political discussions to dance parties. One of the festival’s main components and closing part is CSD Berlin Pride, a protest for LGBTQI+ rights, emancipation, and visibility held in Berlin since 1979. CSD Berlin is named after Christopher Street in memory of the Stonewall Riots. Stonewall event took place in New York City, when trans-POC people, along with gay friends, started riots against police brutality in 1969 to demand better treatment.

On the same day as the official CSD Pride Berlin, there is an alternative Queer Pride for International Solidarity. It starts in Hermannplatz and ends in Oranienburger Platz, famous for its role in the migrant movement of Germany. Queer Pride for International Solidarity stands for an intersectional approach to advocating for queer rights where queer identity is interconnected with being migrant, undocumented, POC, or disabled. It started in 2020, and now more and more people go to the International Pride right after the official CSD. They usually take place in the last weeks of July every year.

There are much more things to tell about queer places in Berlin and its rich history that can’t be covered in one article. According to some estimates, when workers come from non-EU countries, they can have an increase in their salaries by 5 to 10 times compared to what they receive in their home countries. It is all considering that the cost of living in Germany is the lowest among West European countries. However, a complicated German migration policy deters skilled workers around the world from moving there. A new German parliamentary coalition consisting of mostly left and liberal parties recently devised a proposal to solve this issue. From the side of the Government, it is also beneficial for them to mitigate the labor force shortage that the country currently has after the pandemic.

What is an Opportunity Card?

A proposal is the new type of visa – Chancenkarte or an Opportunity Card in English. It is not yet in force, but in September, Labor Minister Hubertus Heil already shared what to expect from it . Keep reading further to find out how the Opportunity Card will work and if you can benefit from it.

An Opportunity Card is a point-based system visa that allows nationals of non-EU countries to come to Germany to continue their career. It differs from existing visas because it does not require a prior work contract to enter Germany. So, you can get a visa, move to Germany and look for jobs there. A similar one also exists: a job-seeking visa allows you to look for jobs in Germany for up to six months. Still, you can work only 10 hours per week for that period. While it was not explicitly mentioned, the Opportunity Card from the governmental proposal is assumed to waive the work-hour limit. Another thing that should be noted here is that Opportunity Card visas will be issued based on a yearly quota that the Government will develop.

How does the Opportunity Card work?

The primary criterion is that a person should be highly skilled. It means either they have an experience in an area that requires vocational training or a university degree, or without professional experience, depending on a specific case—more on that in the next paragraph. A professional area can be, for example, in communication and information technologies, engineering, production, manufacturing, health care, education, finance, natural science, and many other fields that require a previous academic degree or vocational training.

Besides the above criterion, two others exist, depending on your situation. First is the easy path: your university degree or vocational training in your home country should be recognized in Germany. If that’s the case, you don’t need years of experience, German language skills, or age requirements necessary for a second path. On the other hand, suppose your degree or training certificate is not recognized in Germany. In that case, you still need to provide them along with proof of the followings:

Three years of professional work experience;

Necessary German language skills or proof that you previously stayed in Germany;

Be an age of under 35 years old.

In addition, for both ways of getting a visa, you need to provide evidence that you can financially sustain yourself while in Germany looking for a job. It is calculated based on the minimum living cost, which is usually around 900 EUR per month.

All the detailed regulations and terms describing the requirements are not yet developed. So we can not provide, for instance, how long a visa will last or what level of German proficiency you need. We will update you on that when the draft law becomes public. Journey to a safer area can be very difficult, exhausting, and hard to handle. Ukraine’s neighboring country Poland is accepting millions of displaced people and some continue their journey to Germany. We wrote this guide on how to move to Germany from Ukraine to make our small contribution to help people from Ukraine, and present all the available pieces of information and resources in a structured way. Here, we will shortly talk about every aspect of the journey including reaching the western borders of Ukraine, traveling to Germany, getting your paperwork done, finding an apartment, and getting a job or continuing your studies.

Transport

How to reach the western borders of Ukraine?

The western borders of Ukraine you can reach by car or by train. The train is considered a better option. On car roads, there are many checkpoints, a curfew from 20:00, limit of 20 liters of gasoline per car. By car, you should be ready to spend several days on the road and consider options where to spend the night. In List 2 at the end of the article, you can find telegram channels for finding either a place for the night or a free/paid car ride inside Ukraine to western borders and cities.

How to get to western borders on the train?

If you can access the train in your area, you can check the evacuation trains one day in advance on this Facebook page – Ukrzaliznytsia. When you arrive in Lviv, you can take one of 14 suburban trains going to Poland. Schedule of these lines you also can find in the Facebook group above one day in advance.

In Lviv, you also can take buses, microbuses, or cars to the border checkpoint. They depart from the train station and more info you can ask from volunteers there. You can check how loaded each checkpoint is on this Facebook page – Zahidnuy Kordon. All names of currently working checkpoints you can see in List 3 at the end of the article.

How to get to Germany when you have already crossed the EU border?

Deutsche Bahn – German railway company is offering free of charge long-distance rides to Germany for Ukrainian refugees. Currently, 8 lines operate departing from cities such as Warsaw, Gdańsk, Przemyśl, Kraków, Vienna, and Wrocław. You can travel to Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg, or Munich having your Ukrainian passport, ID, or proof of residence. Check out their dedicated web page for up-to-date information on departures – Helpukraine . Upon arrival to one of those cities, you can continue your travel inside Germany for free on DB trains with a Helpukraine ticket that you can get at service points.

If you need a car or bus ride to Germany, you can find information on volunteers helping with that and find other people taking the same route in telegram channels in List 4 at the end of this article.

You arrived in Germany. What is next?

For medical care, psychological help, or help with translation, see List 5 at the end of the article for contacts.

Stay in Germany

Register at the local authority.

You need to register at the local authority within 90 days since you entered German territory. When you make an appointment, in big cities you can be asked to move to other parts of the country and continue your registration process there. Not much discretion is given to applicants with choosing the destination. Therefore, if you know some friends and relatives in some cities and want to live there, go there directly using the DB free Helpukraine ticket and apply for the registration there.
When the EU introduced its decree on temporary protection, Germany extended it to two types of groups as well. Including that, all the groups of people who can enjoy the temporary protection are:

People with Ukrainian citizenship who fled Ukraine as of 24.02.2022

Third-country nationals and stateless people under the protection of Ukraine as refugees who fled Ukraine as of 24.02.2022. Ukrainian travel documents in this case should be sufficient for application in Germany.

Family members of the above groups. Citizenship is irrelevant in this case, however, you need a document proving your relationship as an immediate family member.

Third-country nationals and stateless people with a permanent residence permit in Ukraine and who are unable to safely travel to their country of origin. Examples are not having a passport, health reasons, or not having a flight route back to home country.

Third-country nationals and stateless people with a temporary residence permit in Ukraine and who are unable to safely travel to their country of origin. Stay in Ukraine should have been at least 90 days, so tourists or business travelers do not enjoy this protection. This point can be more relevant to international students or workers in Ukraine.

Ukrainian citizens who were in Germany before 24.02.2022 with different residence permits and if it cannot be extended. For example, if your student, job seeking, or specialist residence permit in Germany expires soon, you cannot extend it, then you are eligible for temporary protection. It also applies to holders of tourist visas who were in Germany before 24.02.2022.

If you belong to underprivileged groups such as LGBTQ+, People with Disabilities, People of Color, or Non-Ukrainian citizenship holders including stateless persons, there can be additional challenges during the process of coming to Germany and dealing with the German state organs. In order to elevate accessibility to the needs of underprivileged groups, there are organizations offering their help exclusively for them. Take a look at them in List 12 if it is relevant to you.
For registration, you will need to bring your Ukrainian identity document, residence permit and a negative corona test result not older than 24 hours. More local information is in List 6.

Where to apply and what documents do I need for a residence permit?

Depending on where you are registered, you should apply to the local migration office. It is normally called Ausländerbehörde or sometimes Landesamt für Einwanderung (LEA). On their website, you will find an application form, fill it out and submit all the necessary documents together. Upon submission, you will receive a confirmation, keep that document as it is now a basis that gives you the right to start working in Germany and be eligible for social and financial benefits.
Documents you have to submit depend on your individual case. You definitely will need your Ukrainian passport or residence permit if you are not a citizen of Ukraine, proof of accommodation, registration certificate, 1 recent biometric photo, and when applicable also a marriage certificate and birth certificate.
When you have already applied for a residence permit assuming you belong to one of the protected groups you can start working in any job and stay legally in Germany for 2 years.

Accommodation

Where to find initial free accommodation?

When you first come to Germany and you don’t have any friends or relatives, you can stay at the initial reception facilities or emergency shelters. Contact your local police or immigration office to find out the address and details. Here you can find your local police, and here your local immigration office. You can stay there as long as you need and they have to provide you with everything you need.

Important warning! Some suspicious individuals want to take advantage of the situation and they offer at train stations or other places to stay at their place for free or by paying you. If you feel unwell, uncomfortable or concerned about your safety call the 24/7 hotline 08000 – 116 016. They provide assistance in Russian as well. When you are at a train station and have questions about accommodation you should approach volunteers who are wearing special-colored vests. Make sure to approach official helpers only.

How to search for private accommodations?

If you decide after staying at the reception center to move out to private accommodation or to directly look for accommodation before coming to Germany, there are many services available that offer either their properties or third-party individual properties. Currently, you can use this website unterkunft-ukraine.de to find accommodation. It is created by local NGOs and they cooperate with the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

As the biggest online housing platform, we, fortunately, have several listing partners who offer their help with accommodation to displaced people from Ukraine. You can check out the dedicated web page of our partners Wunderfalts and Housinganywhere. You can leave your contacts for them and they will assist you with finding accommodation they currently can offer. Besides that, there are other non-official platforms you can use to find an apartment. Check out List 7 for that.

When you want to independently find a long-term apartment, you can use the platform of Immobilien Scout. That is the biggest platform in Germany for buying, selling, and renting real estate for the long term. However, note that in this case, you will need to collect a list of documents to be a candidate for renting. What all of them will require is the SCHUFA certificate and income certificate. SCHUFA is a German credit score system and you can get it only after registering your place of stay at the town hall. Therefore, we advise you to first find a place for the short-term, get your documents done, and then look for long-term rentals. For income, landlords will require a salary or any other income that is three times higher than the price of one month’s rent. When you will be moving in and signing a lease contract, landlords can request a deposit for an apartment that can be up to three monthly cold rents. This is called caution and if you don’t have enough funds you can get a bank guarantee for small payment but not all landlords can accept it.

Work in Germany

Can I work in Germany?

Assuming you already have confirmation of your application for a Residence Permit under Para 24, you have a right to work.

Where to search for jobs?

You can search for jobs through an employment agency or on the internet. Check out this website to find an employment agency in your area. On the Internet, there are many services that you can use to find your suitable or your desired job. Take a look at them in List 8.
As a specially protected person, you can also access services for refugees. There are several websites dedicated to finding a job for refugees only. Take a look at them in List 9.
And finally, there are new platforms dedicated to finding a job for people coming from Ukraine. Check List 10 for that.

Can I continue the career I had in Ukraine?

If you want to continue your career in specialized fields of a profession that are regulated by the state, for example, a doctor, lawyer, nurse, or engineer, you have a right to professional recognition. However, note that you need an advanced level of German proficiency to be able to have professional recognition. More on that you can read on websites in List 11. Unfortunately, they are available in German only except for this which is available in English, Russian, etc.
When you find a job and start to work you enjoy labor rights as much as German citizens. The current minimum wage per hour in Germany is €9.82 which is raising to €10.45 on July 1 this year, and to €12 on October 1. More on what rights you have as an employee you can read here.

Studying in Germany

What is the tuition fee of German universities?

When you receive confirmation of application to Residence Permit you can start enjoying your right to study in Germany. Education, in general, is free in Germany. For most of them, you have to pay a semester fee that covers the administrative cost of the student body and local public transport. It can vary between 100 to 400 euros. The exception is the federal land Baden-Württemberg where tuition for international students starts from 1.5 thousand euros. Private universities and programs in state universities that are not funded by the state are usually not free. You have to pay starting from 3 thousand euros per year.

What are the requirements for admission?

If you are considering a bachelor’s degree, it depends on your previous academic experience. You can directly apply to a university when you have studied at least one year in university in your home country. According to certain regulations, a Ukrainian high school education certificate is not sufficient to directly apply to a university. You can do a one-year preparatory course called Feststellungsprüfung and then freely apply to any university in Germany. However, for that foundation preparatory course, you need at least a B1 level of German knowledge. Most of the universities for bachelor’s studies admission require German level of B2 or C1 except for programs that are entirely in English. Later however most of the time is not free or state-funded so you have to pay for yourself.

Where to search and where to apply?

Most of the universities’ admission processes are partially if not entirely outsourced to a special service for an online application called Uni-assist. You can search for your desired degrees and check the requirements, collect your documents, attach and apply directly from that service.

Are there any funding opportunities available for students and researchers displaced from Ukraine?

Yes, there are. Check out this web page where DAAD collects all the possible opportunities for studies and funding provided locally and internationally.
Also, there is a group of professors helping students displaced from Ukraine to continue their studies and transfer their credits. You can leave your contact on this page and they will get back to you.

Final remarks

We wish there wouldn’t be any reasons to write this article. We hope that this guide could contribute a little bit of information and value to the difficult journey you didn’t choose. If you see any outdated information or want to add more information to this guide, please let us know by emailing info@nestpick.com or by writing to any of our social media accounts. Last but not least, we hope that this war will end soon and people can resume their peaceful lives.

Lists

List 1. Free legal aid. Top 5 places in Europe to go

The hardships brought on by the pandemic have undoubtedly had adverse effects on everyone in society. We’ve all had to change our routines and adapt to an entirely new way of life. One of these changes was switching the office cubicle to a make-shift desk at home for many people. Earlier this year Nestpick has released a Work-From-Anywhere Index to rank the best cities for working remotely and it resonated with many people regarding the new norm of work life.

While there are many benefits of working from home, the humdrum of everyday life can get a bit overwhelming – and that’s where workcations come in. Workcation is a new term floating around the work-from-home universe. Essentially, a workcation is when you take time away from your usual working spot to somewhere else in the world – a bit like digital nomadism. How long people decide to go for varies – it could be anything from a week to a year!

While digital nomadism tends to be more of a permanent lifestyle change, a workcation allows you to take a break from your everyday home working life and combine it with new, rewarding experiences. It’s the perfect opportunity to travel and experience new cultures while keeping your income stable and excelling in your career. It enables you to reap the benefits of a regular vacation without taking a break at all!

According to new research from the language learning brand Babbel, two out of three people believe they would be more productive on a workcation. Other statistics show that 40% of people say they are more productive at home than in the office. This is because of fewer interruptions, more focused time, a quieter work environment, and avoiding office politics. Why limit working from home to your spare bedroom when you could be taking your calls from Rome?

What are the best places for a workcation?

When you think of European destinations, often what comes to mind is Italy, Spain or France. Great food, great weather and friendly people, right? While these destinations are on our list, there are a few surprising destinations that you might not have expected that aren’t super packed with tourists.

This list will help you discover new places for your workcation. Often the countries that sit highest on people’s wish lists won’t necessarily correspond to the areas that might be the best to go, for working life. First of all, let me just burst your bubble by telling you that not everyone can dance flamenco in Spain. Not even 50% of the population can dance flamenco, so no, don’t expect some improvised flamenco panoramas in the middle of the streets or some random guitar players on the corner of every building on your way from home to work. Those things literally only happen on “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”. However, what you can surely count on is on your many paid breaks in Spain. Yes, you are reading right. Spain does pay for your breaks at the workplace; this means that your lunch hour (sometimes even 2 hours) and your mid-morning toast are both paid. Incredible right? I know… Spaniards do it better.

So now that these points have been cleared out, we can continue with the more important stuff. What if I told you that Spain is much more than just fiesta and siesta? Did you know that Spanish people are known for being very hard workers (in most cases, ahem!)? So, if your plan is to move to sunny land without a job on sight, don’t panic, there is light on the other end of the tunnel. As well as all the other countries in Europe, the job market in Spain renews and changes every day offering people different opportunities, as the market evolves. So stay with us a little longer, you are about to get some of the best tips on how to get a job in Spain!

The current job market in Spain

As most of you might already know, Spain was hit by the latest economic crisis, however, in the last few years everything seems to be getting back on track, meaning that new job opportunities are being created and new businesses are opening in the country. Naturally, just like in any other country, in Spain, you can decide whether to work with a classic contractor or as a freelancer. Both options are possible and both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Spain is very well known for its tourism, its little corners, beaches and amazing food, but it is also well known for its huge community of English speaking people; therefore, your English skills in the peninsula are pure gold. Never, EVER, underestimate the value of this language when in Spain.

Different ways of working in Spain

There are two popular ways of working. One of them would be as a classic salaried employee or hired by a company. If you are coming from central or northern Europe, the first thing you will notice is that your brutto amount will be much lower than what you are used to, since the withholding taxes are much less than in other countries. When it comes to negotiating your salary, you should be able to speak about the yearly brutto amount, rather than the netto amount.

Something you must always have in mind when looking for a job in Spain is the following information. One of the first things you should ask when you are offered a work contract in Spain is how many hours you are going to be working. Some companies will offer you a “full-time” job for only 36 working hours. But be careful this is not an advantage; because it means that you will not be contributing as a full-time employee and therefore, in case you happen to lose your job, you will have contributed as a part-time worker meaning that you will not have the right to apply for your full unemployment benefits. So, always make sure you know all the details before agreeing.

Salaries in Spain, as well as in other European countries were badly affected in the last 10 years, especially in the public sector, but luckily this situation is slowly changing. The minimum salary is currently on 965,00 € per month or 32,00€ per day (2021) according to the Ministerio de Empleo y Seguridad Social (Employment and Social Security Ministry). Hopefully, these values and figures will also keep growing as much as the country economy is.

The other way of finding yourself a job would be by becoming your own boss. The option of starting your own business or becoming “autónomo” (self-employed) has increased in the last few years significantly. There are more and more people who are opting for it. If you are planning on becoming an autónomo, for the first time, there are certain details that you might want to hear about. For example, the usual fee as a self-employed person in Spain is 286,15€ per month (2021) according to the Social Security Service, which is a lot coming from other countries. However, if you are becoming autónomo for the first time, your fee will only be 60€ per month for the first 12 months and further discounts apply on the next 2 years as a self-employed (Social Security Service).

Seasonal jobs in Spain

These types of contracts are very, very common in Spain, especially in touristic areas like the Costa Blanca, Costa Brava or Costa del Sol. If you are a free soul, or someone who is not looking to settle any time soon, these jobs in the coasts of Spain allow you to work for 6 months and then move to another city to work on something else or even travel. It is very common to meet people who only work on summer jobs in Spain during the high season (April until October) and then move abroad to work for the winter. Even though this might not be the best idea for those of you looking for stability or moving to Spain with a family, it would definitely work if you were looking for a bit of adventure before finding your ideal apartment in a specific city.
Seasonal jobs can be harder than “classic” white-collar jobs since it will mean a lot of working hours, sometimes even without a day off (from mid-July until mid-August). The good news is, that it definitely pays off. So if you are planning on travelling during the winter, finding a temporal job in Costa del Sol or Costa Blanca is always a good idea. The most beloved cities on the coast to find a job during the summer are usually beach cities located on the East coast such as; Malaga, Marbella, Alicante, Valencia, Javea, Denia, Salou and Barcelona within some others.
Most of these jobs can be done by English speaking people, especially in the cities listed above, however, some hotels and restaurants (depending on their location and type of customers), could ask you for some basic Spanish skills.

English Speaking Jobs

English speaking jobs in Spain are very common and there are a few different opportunities for those who want to live in the land of sun and fiesta. Thankfully, there are huge communities of English speaking people who come to Spain looking for a better lifestyle and warmer winters, so there are many options you can consider if you happen to master the English language.

The very first thing you should consider as an expat in Spain is giving some language classes. Spanish people are every time more into learning new skills since they know that this might open new doors for them or their businesses. Have in mind that practically every job demands English skills if you are working in a touristic area, so English teachers will always be demanded.
Don’t forget the good old way to promote your services. Small communities in smaller cities still use ads in newspapers or simply offer their services in local shops, supermarkets or other spots in their hometown, so you know… in Rome do as the Romans do. However, another idea would be to go to your corresponding ayuntamiento (Spanish for town-hall) and let them know that you are new in town and that you would be happy to offer some courses.

Offering other types of activities in English are also welcome, such as painting, IT or any other type of idea that could attract either the English speaking community or people wanting to learn the language. As long as you are bringing something positive to your local community, the town hall will always be ready to help you out. The sky is the limit, go crazy, and be creative!

Another thing to have in mind is that Spain, unlike other countries, is full of international or English speaking schools. So if you happen to be a teacher, you might want to start there. Bear in mind that in the case you were moving to Cataluña, in most of the cases (even though exceptions may exist), you will be asked to have some knowledge of Catalan. If you don’t have these skills, don’t let it bring you down. Make sure you plan this ahead and book yourself some private classes of Catalan, it will not take you long to learn the basics of the language and it will come in handy in your everyday life.

If you would like to have more chances of securing yourself a job, you should try getting yourself a TEFL certificate (Teaching English as a Second Language). There are many different courses and schools where you can apply to one of their International TEFL Certificate Programs depending on where in Spain you will be living. Ask around when you arrive, so you can find the best school to attend. As mentioned above, this certificate will allow you to teach English not only in Spain but anywhere in the world, so it is totally worth having under your arm.

If you were only looking for a summer job in Spain or simply short summer internship experience, consider applying or looking for an English summer camp. These summer camps are very popular in Spain; they allow parents to keep on going with their normal working schedule while the kids enjoy the summer. The main goal of these camps is teaching the kids English outside class. If this option sounds interesting, look for “Campamentos de Verano en Ingles” or simply “English summer Camps” in Spain. The options are endless and here comes the good news… most of them are located on the beach or nearby – Jackpot!

Work From Home in Spain

When it comes to the work-from-home jobs in Spain, the pandemic drastically influenced the increase of remote working opportunities. Pre-pandemic, Spain had a comparatively low rate of people working from home, only 4.8% of staff would do so more than half of their working hours. Now, many more employers are considering remote working when it seems possible. Even the Spanish government is trying to help this process by legally regulating home-office employment relations. The state is making it mandatory for employers to cover the technical and telecommunication expenses of their workers if they work remotely for more than 30 percent of their time according to BOE.

If you already work remotely and are thinking about living in Spain, there is good news for you. The country is planning to introduce a new type of visa for digital nomads making it easy for people remotely working in foreign companies to stay in the country. It is a great option for freelancers, entrepreneurs with multiple clients, and for part/full-time remote workers in foreign companies. The law itself is still being developed in a Parliament and the detailed procedure of obtaining it will be available soon. Word of mouth is always a good way to find yourself a good job, however, there are other ways and platforms that will help you find the way to your (hopefully) new dream job in the land of paella and sangria.
If you are going to move to a city, the following steps will come in handy, however, if you are lucky enough to be moving to one of those beautiful and traditional villages or small towns in central Spain, the word of mouth system still works. There will always be someone at the bar, who knows someone who needs someone. Don’t be shy; Spanish people are always happy to chat. Best-system-ever.

As old-school as it may sound, the radio and some TV channels still work to find jobs in Spain. For example “Aquí hay trabajo” is a TV program that airs every morning from Monday to Friday on RTVE. They will go through a list of different jobs every day. However, you can also find their list of jobs on their website.
Of course, you can also count on the newspaper; however, the newspapers will always post the most “common” jobs. So if you are in the creative area, for example, the newspaper shouldn’t be your go-to option. Even though newspapers publish job offers every day, the majority of them are posted on Sunday papers. The main newspapers to find these are El Pais, El Mundo and ABC. All of them have naturally, its online edition up-to-date too.

The most well-known ETT in Spain (Empresas de Trabajo Temporal or temporal work recruitment agencies) is Adecco. Adecco will offer you the job and contact you directly. They will be in charge of talking to the contractor you are being connected with. This is definitely a great solution when in need of a job. They are basically head-hunters for all types of jobs.

If you would like to start looking for a job from overseas, you might want to start looking online. Every one of the top-five hottest years have occurred since 2015.

From meteorologists to ecologists, researchers are closely monitoring the effects of climate change and using that data to help better predict changes to come. Chief among those effects are temperature swings: Winters and summers are expected to be warmer in virtually every city by 2050. But just how extreme those increases will be varies by location.

We curated a list of the 20 cities around the world facing the biggest temperature increases in the next 30 years. The rankings come from Nestpick’s own study that looks at how climate change is projected to affect 85 cities around the world by 2050. Findings reveal which cities are most vulnerable when it comes to potential sea-level rise, temperature increases, water shortages, and even which income levels will be most affected. Ties were broken by the projected average annual temperature in 2050. Cities are listed from lowest temperature increase (#20) to highest (#1).

“These results are eye-opening to our team at Nestpick, as a number of the cities which will undergo the most drastic changes in climate over the next three decades are some of the most popular destinations for Millennials, Gen Z-ers and those even younger, they will increasingly need to keep climate change in mind when searching for the city they would like to eventually settle in,” Comments Omer Kucukdere, CEO at Nestpick.

Even small average temperature increases can wreak havoc on local economies, culture, and ecology. Baked into averages are more aggressive weather events and “weather whiplash,” from droughts and wildfires to heavy rainstorms and flooding. Higher temperatures mean bigger energy bills and potential for power outages, while persistent heat waves and droughts spell trouble for agriculture and fish populations.

These scenarios, while already underway, assume that fossil fuels are burned at the same rate. Mitigation efforts could avoid worst-case scenarios, while infrastructure plans in cities will help manage the effects if they should come to full fruition. Keep reading to learn more about the 20 cities globally with the biggest projected temperature increases by 2050.

#20. Summer high temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit, but it’s estimated that the city will see more and more 90-degree (32.2 C) days in the years to come. Heat can be deadly, particularly for the elderly—and especially in a city where infrastructure isn’t already in place to support cooling off its residents. Meanwhile, sea levels in Seattle have risen 6 inches over the past century and are expected to rise 10 more inches by 2050.

#19. It ranks 21st in the world for worst sea level rise, with 6 more inches expected in the next 15 years alone. The city is focusing on preparing their waterfronts by restoring marshes in waterfront parks and encouraging flood-resistant developments. It’s not totally clear why Boston and the rest of New England are slated to get disproportionately warmer under climate change, but climatologists suspect it relates to warming seas and its location related to the jet stream and Gulf Stream.

#18. Helsinki is doing its part to prevent global warming and has committed to becoming carbon-neutral by 2035, reducing its carbon emissions by 80%. The city is most concerned about floods and extreme winter conditions and is already ramping up for city-led adaptation strategies like improving stormwater management for floods and improving the cooling of homes for heatwaves.

#17. Construction on a $3.85 billion floodgate across the Gulf of Finland was begun in 1979 to protect the historic city and UNESCO World Heritage Site from storm surges. The project was not completed until 2011 and has held since, but officials noted that the Neva Bay is freezing over later each year which increases the chance for early winter storm surges.

#16. The city is bracing for more heat-related illnesses in the summer, home damage and power outages from more frequent severe storms, strained sewer systems from increased rainfall, and damage to roads and other infrastructure from more frequent freeze-thaw cycles. Spring floods are of particular concern to property owners. Ottawa’s government rolled out an ambitious goal of reaching zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

#9. Sweden is working toward carbon neutrality, aiming for a 100% reduction in emissions by 2040. Sea levels in the Baltic Sea around Stockholm have risen, but the land has been rising just as fast as it decompresses after becoming ice-free which has kept the coastlines dry.

#8. As part of its 2020–2030 climate plan, the city aims to plant 500,000 trees and protect 10% of the territory’s land in order to decrease climate vulnerability and reduce the area of the city’s worst heat islands.

#5. A 2015 study from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health found that some areas of the city can be up to 22 degrees (12.2 C) hotter than other neighborhoods. More precipitation means more rain in summer and snow in winter, as well as more extreme storms, hurricanes, and flooding. The city’s climate adaptation plan includes engaging citizens and support for local food networks.

#4. The city’s Disaster Preparedness and Planning Project (DP3) was launched in 2013 to lead the efforts in creating a more resilient city. High tides already breach the popular Inner Harbor area, cutting off access to its businesses. By 2045, it’s expected these high tide flood events will be 10 times more common.

#2. The city government reported in 2019 that it has implemented 2,000 different projects to care for the environment, including planting 50,000 trees, energy efficient building renovations and more.

September 2020 was the hottest recorded month worldwide, with 2020 representing the second-hottest year ever recorded.
