Moving to Athens and Finding a Furnished Apartment

The cost of living is lower in Athens compared to other European capitals, although finding work can be hard as an expat. Greek legislation requires that foreigners produce documents from their sponsoring company that determine that they were more eligible for this position than other Greek citizens. However as a student in Athens, there is plenty to learn from and explore. If you love history, good food and culture, Athens will entertain you.

When moving to Athens, expect sun and hot summers as it is a mediterranean city. Locals typically leave the city and go to beaches along the ‘Apollo Coast’ whenever possible. Yet be aware not all beaches are free, some you will have to pay entrance. Beaches like this usually have cafes, toilets, showers, ball games and more.

Residential Areas of Athens

Plaka

The Plaka neighborhood in Athens is in the Old Town. Cutting through the middle of Plaka is the ‘Adrianou’ street. As the most central street from north to south, it divides Plaka into two areas: Ano Plaka and Kato Plaka. The district is heavily visited by tourists and known as the “Neighborhood of Gods”. Naturally, Greek restaurants are popular in Plaka amongst the locals and visitors. Both traditional and contemporary Greek food is everywhere in this neighborhood.

Monastiraki

This peculiar neighborhood is a Flea Market district located in Athens’ Old Town. Named after the ‘Monastiraki Square’, the courtyard is surrounded by shops and boutiques and is a prime location in the city. The Monastiraki Flea Market in Athens is very popular. The shops here are less commercial and store owners and patrons are always bargaining. In addition, Monastiraki Square is full of markets suited to a variety of tastes and cultures, so finding food from home shouldn’t be too difficult.

Omonia Square

This square known to locals as ‘Omónia’ and translates to Concord Square. Omonia is also a quite populated district as it serves as the intersection of 6 different streets. Omonia Station in Athens also serves as a huge transportation hub, which is located underneath the square. Despite the recent modernizing of the area, Omonia Square is the oldest square in Athens and is considered one of the centers of the city. Unfortunately, Greece’s economic crash caused an influx economic hardship around the area.

Student Apartments in Athens

Athens has played an important role in educating since Ancient Greece. The city has lot’s of schools and universities offering higher education to international students, where students can also opt for student apartments.

Student apartments in Athens are self arranged and are aimed at either sharing or renting privately. In a shared apartment you will typically pay the rent for the room and have a shared bathroom/kitchen. Although the price for a room can vary depending on your location in Athens, rooms in shared apartments are perfect for creating life experiences and making new friends.

Note: In Athens it is typical you will pay a month’s rent for a deposit alongside one month’s rent upfront. Required documents are ID, proof of income and possibly proof that you are a student.

Transportation in Athens

Public transportation in Athens is operated by trams, metro and buses. The metro system is highly accessible for visitors considering all the machines are international and the staff speak English. Public transport operates between the hours of 5:00am and midnight. Buses do operate a night bus service, for party-goers and airport access. Taxi’s are also an option.

The trams operate over 5 main lines and is a cheaper option than the metro. Apps such as CityMapper and Simera, are great for real-time travel updates and directions for when you first move.

Note: Public transport in Athens is hot with pickpockets and petty thieves, so when travelling in Athens beware of your belongings.
