Once the wealthiest city in Poland, Gdansk is fast rediscovering itself as one of the jewels of Central Europe and with it being increasingly popular with students and digital nomads – now is the time to find an apartment to rent in Gdansk. Although the majority of the city center was bombarded during World War II, it has been painstakingly restored and renovated to its former glory – with many old warehouses and factories being converted into some of the best apartments in Gdansk. Gdansk apartments really have something to offer everyone – from the old world echoes in Old Town to the newer condo's and apartment buildings that are increasingly more visible in the city.

Types of Accommodations in Gdansk

Apartments in Gdansk By District

Although when you see Gdansk, especially on the tourist trail – you may stick to the Main Town and Old Town – there is so much more to this coastal city that needs discovering! The Main Town however is popular for a reason – housing the majority of Gdansk's famous sites, it has been restored and rebuilt recently and its waterfront locations are home to some of the most exclusive addresses in the city – with countless bars, pubs and restaurants waiting to be explored – an apartment in Gdansk's Main Town is an adventure waiting to happen. Across the river from Main Town is the equally impressive Olowianka District – once the home to all of Gdansk's granaries – the run-down buildings have been restored into some of the coolest and bohemian neighborhoods in the city.

Wrzeszcz

Despite having a tricky name – this area is one of the coolest areas in Gdansk and apartments in Wrzeszcz are increasingly sought after. Once a crumbling and almost forgotten corner of the city, it has been reclaimed, first by a large student population, but also with creatives and artists. This influx of creatives has surged life into the old neighborhood and where once stood derelict buildings, now are trendy bars, restaurants and coffee shops – that all still retain the prewar flavor. In the areas of Wrzeszcz closest to the city center you can find a lot of shopping and a more commercial side to the streets. Rent is still low in this part of the city, though with the increased gentrification – it wouldn't be surprising if prices on Wrzeszcz apartments shot up soon.

Jelitkowo

Towards the North West of Gdansk lies the beautiful area of Jelitkowo. Previously it was a small fishing village – not part of the city proper, but over time more and more people began to live out here – taking advantage of the leafy parks and also the stretches of sandy beaches which become prime real estate in the hot summer months. Modern day Jelitkowo is a combination of past and present – with the old beach clubs back in the swing of things all summer long – but modern apartments and condos in Jelitkowo are springing up fast. Close enough to the city to get anything you need but far enough away to enjoy a spot of peace and quiet apartments in Jelitkowo might be that perfect compromise.

Old Town

Despite the trend in other European cities to have the Old Town as the prime sightseeing destination, it is a predominantly residential area in Gdansk – with the vast majority of the sites being found in Main Town. Apartments in Old Town Gdansk, otherwise known as Stare Miasto has stood since Medieval times with 30% of the street names remaining unchanged for over 500 years! As such you can imagine Gdansk Old Town apartments are found within some stunning buildings - and while retaining their period features have often been renovated and remodeled in style. Prices are of course higher here – but with all the history and charm at your doorstep, if you find an apartment you love – it's worth the extra cost.

A room in a dormitory can cost anywhere between $180-300 a month and of course comes with the camaraderie of student life. However, if you are craving that little bit more independence – the district of Wrzeszcz is alive with students and there are some very reasonable apartments and student accommodation in Gdansk to rent. As it seems the world over – it is very popular to find an apartment to split with a group of other people - reducing the costs for everyone and allowing you to live in the neighborhood you want.
