Rent Apartments in Santa Maria Maior

Santa Maria Maior is a large central district that actually encompases other districts, including the famous Alfama, Baixa, Sé and Bairro Alto neighborhoods. Santa Maria Maior resides to the east of the city center, although is often considered an extension of the center in it’s own right. The area is bursting at the seams with culture and diversity, as many of the city’s locals and internationals live together harmoniously in this area. Great food, shopping and entertainment opportunities are available as well as most of Lisbon’s historical and artistic sites. Many of the centuries-old buildings have been renovated because of the 1755 earthquake that rocked the city. Since then, the Santa Maria Maior has seen many improvements, from more luxurious housing to more high-end business endeavors. Apartments in Santa maria Maior can be found in a diverse range of sizes, styles and price ranges. Whether you’re looking for a luxury or cheap apartment in Santa Maria Maior, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for at an affordable price.

Santa Maria Maior Neighborhoods

Rent Apartments in Alfama

The Alfama neighborhood is Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood as it was established by the Moors, centuries ago, in the 7th century AD. Alfama is characterized by narrowly winding streets that travel all the way up the hill towards the castle, providing some of the best views in all of Lisbon, and some say in Western Europe. Alfama offers some of the most authentic “old-world” feel, as the facade and pace of life in this neighborhood have not changed for many years. This neighborhood is also where the Fado culture was created in the late 1800s. In this neighborhood you have the opportunity to experience Fado restaurants and music, as they can be found all over Alfama. These days it has been attracting a lot of tourists, and its location makes it a popular area for finding apartments in Alfama. Cheap apartments in Alfama are also available, as Lisbon is surely the cheapest capital in Western Europe. Although it is a beautiful neighborhood, it does not offer all the amenities of a more modern area, so if relocating to Lisbon long-term, it may be better to search for accommodation elsewhere.

Rent Apartments in Bairro Alto

Bairro Alto (Portuguese for “High District”) is situated on a hill near the center of the city. This particular neighborhood is infamous for its nightlife and festive energy. The streets are narrow and the neighborhood is designed in a grid formation, making it rather easy to navigate. During the day, Bairro Alto is a quiet, sleepy part of town without much going on. There are a few stores and shops open and is a nice place to relax and take a nice stroll. During the evening and night however, this Lisbon neighborhood starts to come alive. Bairro Alto is home to literally hundreds of bars and also restaurants and smaller eateries; and as a dedicated party zone, it is also known to be very noisy throughout the night. Some would advise not to look for apartments in Bairro Alto when moving to Lisbon, because of the late-night noise. On the other hand if the festive vibe does not put you off, cheap apartments in Bairro Alto are available.
