A popular point in Salamanca's city centre is the Plaza Mayor. It was constructed over 200 years ago and it was once ordered by Philip V of Spain to be used for Bullfighting. Salamanca was first conquered in 3 B.C and has seen both Roman and Moorish settlements.The combination of historical periods gives the Plaza Mayor unique characteristics and stunning architectural designs. For that reason the Old City in Salamanca is a World UNESCO Heritage site.

The open courtyard is home to bars, shops, cafes and restaurants all along the edge. It is the perfect place for people to meet or relax after a long day of work or school. Often used as a meeting point, as it is accessible from the popular high street’s Calle del Toro and Calle de Zamora.

The central market is also held in the Plaza’s courtyard and is divided over two floors. At Christmas, the square is filled with lights and festivity, especially for the university’s Atila celebration. Similarly on New Year’s eve the city meets at the Plaza Mayor for the countdown.

San Bernardo is a district located west of the center and hosts one of San Bernardo’s largest markets. Farmer’s markets are very popular with the locals in Salamanca and are usually open Monday-Saturday. The food sold here is typically very high quality. Often it is noticeable that the markets are more popular with older residents or restaurant buyers. Nonetheless the authentic, bustling vibe gives a burst of life and culture to any ‘regular’ supermarket shop.

During the 40’s and 50’s many brick-designed buildings were built in San Bernardo to host its increasing population. Since then the university’s ‘Campus Unamuno’, Trinitarios School, The Lucía de Medrano Institute and El Carmelo College have been built or completed. As a result San Bernardo is heavily populated by students and has taken the district in a new direction. An aftermath of new shops, bars and eateries have opened creating a fun, fresh and central neighbourhood to live in.

For practicality this district has all you can ask for; supermarkets, clothes stalls, hair dressers, dentists and for you pet owners, there is even a veterinarian in San Bernado. In fact the university hospital is in San Bernado, being close to San Bernardo's Health Center in Salamanca is also great if you study medicine.

Flats in Garrido

Garrido is located in the northeastern part of Salamanca and is still commutable to the city center. Garrido is the largest populated district in Salamanca and is defined by either Garrido Norte (the larger side) or Garrido Sur. Some locals own cars in this district and lot’s of young people own scooters for transportation. As a self contained district, all amenities are found local: here you will find a department store, many supermarkets, doctors, schools for all ages, cafes/bars for young and old.

Student Accommodation in Salamanca

Student accommodation choices in Salamanca are either on-campus or sharing a student apartment or renting privately. All types will have their pro’s and cons.

A shared apartment is great to meet new people and is also very cost effective. A room in a shared apartment would cost between €250-400. Private apartments in the city cost up to €2,000 but some studio apartments can be as low as €650-800.

A student dormitory is a great way to immerse yourself into university life. The campuses for foreign students at Salamanca university are ‘‘Colegio Mayor Hernán Cortés’, ‘Colegio de Cuenca’, ‘San Vicente’ and ‘Atenea’. All four are in close proximity and there are options to have catering included.


Public Transportation in Salamanca

The public transportation in Salamanca consists of buses, a main railway station and taxis. The cost of the buses is cheap considering it stretches over 13 routes and costs only €1 for a single ride. However bus cards are used by locals which helps to reduce the daily rate. Longer buses to Madrid are frequent alongside airport connections from Barcelona or Valladolid.
